His Honor, in passing sentence, said he had a painful duty to perform, as it was a terrible thing to see men like the prisoners before a Court of Justice at all. Slenth and Fergusson were each sentenced to two years’ imprisonment ; Hewitt, Rolking, and Horne, each to 18 months’ ; Herbert to 9 months’ and Bennet to 3 months’. All the prisoners will have hard labar. In cases of assault against Unionists, there was one conviction and three were acquitted. Unkles, for riotous behaviour, was sentenced to 8 months’ imprisonment. Prevailing impression among m»n at Broken Hill was that accused would be acquitted, and result has caused dismay. Oct 30

Mass meeting was held in Domain today, when petitions were signed demanding release ot members of the Broken Hill Labor Defence Committee. Monster meeting is to held ou Tuesday for same object. Large mob attacked several free laborers at Broken Hill last night. Police arrested one of offenders, whom mob tried to rescue. During melee four of the police were injured by stones and other missiles. Oct 31

Herald supports verdict in conspiracy cases. Telegraph applauds it as a complete justification of action of Government in connection with arrests. Verdict and sentences have aroused very bitter feeling in Unionist circles, and leader asserts that agitation is of greater magnitude than any that has yet taken place in the colonies. At Broken Hill on Saturday night 7 men were arrested for riotous behaviour, and 29 for various offences, ranging from assaulting police to drunkenness.
