THE CANTERBURY SHOW.
The very prominent position taken by Marlborough sheep at the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Show last week was not altogether a surprise, though the success achieved was more pronounced than was generally expected. The lion's share of this success falls to the credit of Messrs F. and G. F. Bullen, whose triumphs mav almost be considered phenomenal. To carry off two championships, two silver medals (the best offered), four first prizes, three seconds, four-thirds and one highly commended, sweeping the board in two classes, is very remarkable indeed, and has, We are informed, never before been done in New Zealand by any exhibitor of sheep alone. The Messrs Bullen woilld dertainly have gained another first prize—that offered for the sheep most suitable for export—had they entered the lists. Tnis was admitted on all hands, the giver of the special prize stating that the Messrs Bullen sheep were the very best and the sort he wished to entourage the breeding off, at the same time ekpressing regret that the Messrs Bulled had not competed for the prize. Mr CharlesGonlter’s success was not only well deserred, but vety pleasing to all. He was placed at a much greater disadvantage than any other breeder, by reason of his having had to bring his sheep from a much greater distance than any other exhibitor, necessitating a lengthy sea journey and a godd deal of knocking about. Surprise was expressed at hts ewe hogget being thrown out of the class in which it Was entered and transferred to another class, in which it got second prize. It was generally held to be the finest one of its class shown, and it should have been awarded first prize. Great Credit is due to the Messrs Bullen add to Mr Ck Goulter for the manner id which they Upheld Marlborough’s prestige for sheep breeding'. They surprised everybody Unacquainted with this Provincial District. To Mr J. D. Lancd and Mr Reginald Foster the victories Of “ our ” sheep were not Unexpected, the expressions of Others were Such as: “ Well, Mr Bullen has beaten Us all hollow ” ; “ How Kaikouta has Woke up ; why it has done what no other one district has done before at oUr Show's” • “Mr Bullen has giVen us an eye, opener ” ; “ Bravo ” ; “ WqAL*Lma M r hope he will do eved better next t®o,” and so on. The name of “ BullenV is almost a household word in parts of New Zealand, and other Colonies, and it is very pleasing to find the Messrs Bulled Winning renown in keen competition With other famous sheen breeders. ' In this they have done Kaikoura a lot of good. Their success is very valuable to this community. Mr AngUs Kennedy, under Whose charge Messrs Bullen’s sheep are and have been, is worthy of the highest praise for the excellent manner in which he put the sheep into the sboW pens. The various exhibits did him very great credit indeed, and it must be exceedingly gratifying to him that the Messrs Bullen Were so remarkably successful. Lodg mav they and he continue to be so.
