PLOUGHING MATCH.
A meeting of the Ploughing Match Committee was held at the Adelphi Hotel on Saturday evening. Present—Messrs Jamison (Chairman), Harnett, sen., W. D. Smith, G. Taylor, Gallagher, Mellish, Warren, P. Peoples, Close, Curtain, H. Schroder, Barrett, W. Lawson and Howard.
The minutes of the previous meeting wi re read and confirmed. After considering the sites for holding the match, Mr Mellish suggested that two or three be appointed to go round the district and find out the most suitable place, and report.- - Mr Harnett agreed, at the same time suggesting that subscriptions should be solicited.
Messrs Gsllagar, Warren nad Lawson, were appointed to see the various paddocks in the district suitable for holding the match, and to select the best available, also to fix the date for the event to take place.
Mr Harnett further explained the position of affairs respecting the surplus funds, accruing from the last ploughing match, how the money had been placed at interest with Capt. Davidson. He was glad that after a lapse of six or seven years, a start was being made to hold another match, and he hoped that they would be held annually in future. Resolved—“ That subscription lists be opened and entrusted to Messrs Harnett, Barratt and H. Schroder to canvas the district,” each to take a section of rural and suburban portion of the district, the three jointly to canvas the town. The opinion of the meeting was taken, respecting flkjpg the minimum subscription to match and dinner at 10s. Mr Mellish, though not entirely opposed to it, remarked that it was not customary to make such a rule. The meeting generally approved of the idea, deeming it a very good one the large attendance at the previous dinner being instanced. Mr Harnett saying that tenders should be invited for the spread.
It was resolved on the motion of Mr Smith, seconded .by Mr Howard—“ That the two Committees appointed be appointed a joint Committee to make arrangements for the dinner.” All present agreed to subscribe ten shillings. . Discussion took place on the size of the furrows. Mr Mellish suggested 5 inches by 9 inch'-.,. Mr Harnett 6 by lu. Mr Wsrren Tayloi and carried. Tiie question of allowinaSSjM^M^^'. the ground before the ploughing, caused rather sion, both sides holding decidedly 'contra opinions, expressed themselves strongly, it was decided that the judges be allowed to come on the ground whenever they chose. Messrs W. Lawson, Jesse Redwood, and Geo. Taylor, were appointed judges. Resolved—“ That competing teams be on the ground at 9 a.m., ploughing to start at 10 a.m. and to finish at 2 p.m., half an acre to be ploughed.” Mr Harnett suggested that the secre- [ tary write to the implement makers in Christchurch and Dunedin, asking for special prizes. He moved accordingly, . and Mr Warren, seconding the proposii tion, it was agreed to. , A few other matters of minor importance were refered to, without action being taken thereon, and the meeting concluded with the customary compliment to the Chairman.
