The ordinary meeting' of the Council wns held at the Chambers, Broadway, Eeeffcon, oni Thursday, 4th October, 187?-. Pnesent : Messrs Brennari (chairman) Byrne, Caplbs, Irving, Dick, and Kelly. Tho minutes of the previous meeting wero read', and, on the motion of Mr Byrne, seconded by Mr Irving,, were confirmedi. Z^^. Fron* Mr Warden i?haw enclosing a rider attached to. a verdict found by the Jury at the Inquest of H'enni Tourette. From- Sand and Lynch asking for com* pensation. for deprivation, of use ofrGJhOwn Lands at Crushington. From the Manager of the- Bank of New • Zealand, stating that the- Bank always disclosed when, passing the gold through the Customs where such gold came from. From! George' complaining: of nuisance in Bridge Street.. BromiJohn. Harrold, applying for £60 compensation for allowing- traffic over his contract during progress of contract. Fromi G. W'ooliey, appealing against rates.. From. Timothy- Caddigflni, complaining of discourtesy and 1 threats used by F. Brandt, ferryman».Buller Junction.. From.E, §.. Cooper, enclosing memorandum in> reference to Hkmpden petition. The correspondence as read was received. ' With* respect to Ilio- letter fnom the Coroner, E. Shaw, Esq., enclosing rider arrived ot by the jury on H. D' Tourette. : lhe Cha. rman. saidi he did not see how the Council should rest undor such an ■imputation. The Council had taken all reasonable means of .providing accotn* modation, particularly having regfii'd to tho small number of persons to be convenienced by the ferry. Mr. Dick quite concurred with the' Chairman.. He' did not see that any blame aMnched to the Council. All had* beon. doixe which; tho necessities- of the case rcquiced. Mr Kelly tliQiicht that no sensiblb body of men would* have added such a rider. A ferry was provided until 11 o'clock at night,.and 12'o'olock on, Saturday nights, and 1 nothing mone could be expected, in reason. Mt Byrne considered' that the Council hnd done all it could in the matter. Mr Dick, thought it advasablo-to-reply to the Coroner, stating that the Council had done what was considered* neoessary in the matter.. Mr Caples- though the Council should take-no, notice oflthe letter. The Chairman, considered' that the Council should display sufficient spirit to say that) they did! not consider themselves as having been &b all remiss, and. possibly, .had the jury been, aware of the steps wJiich the Council had taken in the m atterij.no such rider wouldihave beea. added. Mr Dick moved, " Thafc> as- the Council had provided' a. ferry up. to Hi o'clock at night they had 1 done all. that was. necessary, and therefore the- rider of the- jury was considered unoalledi for. "—Carried. With rsgard to the application of Kane and Lynch for compensation— Mr, Dick regarded the application, as. a most monstrous one, and mowed that the matter bo thrown. out ab once. In. reply- to Mr Byrne,. the Clerk said that Eauo and Lynch, had paid 20s, rates for the ground in question. Mr Bay.feild. moved, thafc the. matter should ho allowed, to. stand over- to the next meeting. Mr JEelly thought some compensation was. due to Kane andLynchi : There was- no seconder- to. Mr Dick's motion,. which consequently lapsed.. Mr- ByirnQ. seconded Mrv Bayfeild's motion. Mr Caples would; like to,/ bflflß more of the matter. The motion was then put; and'aanriedl.
Re the complaint of Georga Taylor. Referred to Engineer. Be claim of John Harrold for compen' satioo. The clerk was instructed to reply, stating that the Council could not enter' tain the application, find that steps be takeo to suspend all traffic upoo his contract pending its completion. The letter of G. Woollev w Jth respect to rates was referred to the Eiecative Committee. "■ | Re tthe complaint on tho part of ©ad- ! digan, relative to Brandlt, ferryman at the Landing. Matte? referred to* Brandt. Pietitioa read from residents of Reefton aad Larry's Creek, praying r th>a6 a d*ay road be constructed' from, the Bailor Road do Collinton. The-Chairman suggested that a metalled foot track might meet all 1 tho requirements of the case. After some discussion Mr Byrne moved' that Engineer report upon the- probable character and) cost of a dray road 1 to Cbl* linton.. Mr Eelly seconded the motion, which was^ carried. A long diisoussiori arose upoa Mr J. Williams'" application for. compensation for land taken for road purposes ;-. fioally Mr Byrne moved that the Council pay the sum demanded £70 8* 9d. Seconded 1 by Mr Eelly. MrjDick moved! as an amendment, that the OouncH will not entertain hi»applica» tipn fpp land taken for road at Fern ( Flat. by Mr Bbyfeild.
