circuit yesterday morning-, and w-ill probably bo detained down counfcry for a week or ton days. On. Wednesday morning laab Mr Warden Shaw, accompanied' by Mr .&, Woolloy visited tho Phoenix mine, Murray Creek, in connection with the application recently made for the cancellation of the lease of that Company. Tho reading pnblic is informed that ttie current subscription quarter to the Athenteum commenced on the Ist instant, mid all persons desiriouß of enrolling themselves a 9 members may do so- on application to MrSchulhof, fcho librarian. : The luxury of belaboring a stubborn horseover the head with a. broom-handle is, it would seem, rather expensive in Roeffcou, six pound's and costs being fcho sum which the Resident Magistrate assessed on Tuesday last, for a first offence of this character.. There has been considerable demand' for Welcome shaves during tho week, and quotations now rag<s as high as £2 155, sales havingbeen effected early in tlio week at £2' 10s. This rapid increase in the price of tho scrip is due to the very much|improved appearance of the- form' and 1 character of s'one.in the .mine) as also to indications in tho Hope famine-. Tho Hopeful 1 crushing is proceeding with every satisfaction, and the return- fa ex» pected to be fully up. to tho high average of' pasfc crushinga of the Company. , It is announced that Miss Bontrice Lyster and Mr A. Inglis will re«appear in G-ilm6r's Hall, on Saturday, evening next. A lengthy programme has been provided, for the occasion. The highly amusing' piece " B&m---'bastes Fiirioso," will be presented; one of the chief characters of which will be sustained' by Mfr-E. W. Butler, a gentleman amateur who has won considerable distinction unon the boards of amateur theatricals. Mr Martinelli also appears in tho same piece with Mr Ihglis ' and Miss Lyster. The- entertainment oh the .wholewiilj.no doubt, afford, a very, pleasant ' evening's amusement. The funeral of the late Mir Henri J3e Tourettes took, place on- Wednesday, afternoon last, loaving the Oddfellow?' Hall' at 2.30> | o'clock. The deceased, during||us long residence in Reefton, had, intimately identified himself with tho Order, of Oddfellows' here and' tho members of the Lodge attended in. mourning regalia to testify their respect for his memory. The various business places in town were closed during the' day, and by request, the meeting; of tho County. Council to be held on that day was adjourned until' Thursday. The coffin was borne by members of tho Order, and tho burual 1 service was pew 'formed by Rev. Mr Rutherford,. Mlv Philip. Alexander, the N.G.. of the- Lodge, reading the service of the Order. We laarn from a correspondent thafrfche site of tho. Whited Alpine Company's operations,, at- Lyellj is^prosenting. a very lively soene. Numbers of persons interested in the con* traots recently let by the Company for surface works have- visitod' the spot-, an.l entered upon; the preliminaries of the work. The machinery has been landed on the spot, and the work of preparing for its erection, is now proceeding. Adi possible despatch will be used in the completion of the various works, with tho now of getting the stampers undor i weigh, and the residents* of Lyell andi vicinity build great hopes upon the future of tho undertaking, not only, so far as tlio.shareholders are concerned) but also on a lever by which tho languishing mining- in«dustry of the district will bo onco move raised ,to activity,, and the future- of the district isIbokedi forward to with high hope. i At a- meeting of tho Jockey Club, held on Wedneoday evening last, some doubt was., expressed as to tho fitness of tho course for racing in December next, A sub-committee-was appointed to visit tho ground at once, and order- any work necessary in tho way of .improvement. Mbssrs-Wiso and Potts were , proposed to canvass R&efton for subscriptions,, and instructed- to enter upon their duties at The. district- canvassers, were also. directed to complete their- labors aB early, as possible, and at- the meeting, of' tho Club, | to be held nest week, it is very probable that a programme will be submitted! A vote of thanks was voted' to Mv Mirfin, the- retiring hon. secretary, and Mv J. W, Mu»>son was appointed secretary at' tho rate of one guinea per week. The Alpino Company Lycll are about to . erect their machine, and,, when fiuished, the local journal thinks tho- adjoining ground holders will take heart of grace,. acd go- to work in right earnest. Rumor reports a reefi struck in the Little Wonder mine ; rich stonois showing in the Ophir, and tho Bronlt'O*' Day, and Prospectors are turning out more than payable stone. The excitement in Wangnnui on i last, on the publication of the names of former. Wan gari ui residents lost at sea by the
wreck of the Avalanche, was intense. Business was almost entirely suspended, shops were closed, and the neighbourhood of the newspaper offices was ovowded with people. The tolling of tho bell of St. Paul's Church told of the arrival of the sad news. Many Carlyle residents we're personally acquainted with those who aro now numbered with the dead, aud sympathy is wide spread. i\ Immediately on arrival of the telegram with list of names an extra of the Patra. MAI& was issued, and distributed about town. There was one error in tho telegram sent here—^the,,namo of Mta Watt was given instead of that of Miss Watt. Mv,ijwanson f M.H.R. h .is, repouted by Hansard to have thus, discoursed on the difficult art of collecting subscriptions ! — " Let any one undertake the unplonsant task of collecting subscriptions. Ho wilt find that there are (.three sets of people. First,, those who have nothing* It is e£ no use to go to them. Then there are those who have something, aad whoi are willing to give to certain people and to certain causes. One wilt give to a particular cause, another to a particular person. I daresay there two a few of us who, if a good«looking girl camo along; and talked in a aoothmg way, would give more willingly than to an ugly old *m<ui.. These are the sources the subscriptions are to be got from. These ase tha numbs the Government are relying upon, arid I do not think they are legitimate. There is another sot of men II know many of them myself, and you might as well try to suckle- a child on. bhe breast of a stone statue. j
