The claim was being worked by Cooney Kelly; Eiley, and Quinlevan, near the I prospectors' claim, Dillmau's track, i Whilst working in the mine, a set of timber gave way, causing an immense fall of earth, which completely enveloped the men. The occurrence was not known till evening when the men should have 1 left work. An examination of the tunnel | was made and immediate steps taken for their rescue. Eelays of miners have been working most energetic/illy . Quinlivan was got out at three this morning. He is not seriously hurt. K-elly can be heard speaking, it is expected he will be released this afternoon. It is feared that Cooney and Ei ( ley are dead, and it will take a long tyme to recover the bodies as the air in the tunnel is very foul, and it is with great difficulty the rescuers can work. Mr Munro, Mayor of Westport, yes* terday concluded arrangements with the GoTornment as to leases of town sections at Westport forming part of the Colliery Reserve, and in reference to which a Royal Commission reported last year.
