The remains of Mr Williams' infant child were conveyed to the Oemetery on Saturday afternoon. The funeral moved from Williams' Hotel, and was very numerously Bttended. Owing to numerous alterations which the supervising Engineer has ordered in reference to the specifications for the Gtrey road, some little delay has been necessary in the comn pletion of the plans for the work. Tenders for the work will olqse on the 23, rd instant. Anderspn's Extended shares still oontinue to head the list of popular stocks, and are now quoted at 4s 3d. Large parcels are said to have changed hands at that figure on Saturday evening last. Nil Desperandum shares are saleable at 2s 6d. stand at 11s, with a disposition to advance. No material alteration h&3 taken place in previous quotation?. Owing to the Fiery Cross Company requir* ing the battery sooner than was expected, the Hopeful crushing will be brought to a close in a fortnight from the present time. The Just-in-Time Company are also ready to crush, but owing to the deficient crushing power are : debarrod. No better argument could be desired in. favor of the proposed addition tq the battery than is here cited.. A very successful meeting was held at Gilmer's Hotel on Friday ovening last, for the purpose of considering the probabilities and prospects of 'forming^ a Jookey^ Club in Reefyon. Mr. Warden Shaw occupied the 1 Chair, and briefly explained the object of the ; meeting. On the motion of Mr Davies, Mr Mirfin was appointed Secretary, pro. tern., to ■ the meeting. Resolutions were carried affirm* f ing the desirability of forming a Jockey Club, and those present were Jduly enrolled, with power to add to their number.. The entrance fee was fixed at two guineas,, and the annual subscription at the same figure. A subcommittee was formed to canvass for subscriptions and report generally upon the prospects of a race meeting in March or Apri| next. Mr George "Wise was appointed Treasurer At . the request of the meeting, Mr Warden Shaw .undertook to' communicate with the Commissioner of Crown Lands, with, tho view of securing a reserve for a race-course at Fern Flut i The meeting, which was a very enthusiastio one, then adjourned until Friday, the 20th instant. The writer of the theatrical, article in the , New Zealand Sun speaks very ffivomb'y of i the G-.eorgiu Minstrels. He says : — I am not | going through the programme piecemeal, but 1 5. may say at once that the first part— the chair business— was a grand success, judging from the enthusiasm it excited in the audience. The choruses were for the most part, splendidly given — with vigour and precision, and at the same time a tasto, that made them p r, fectly enjoyable- Theu the orchestra is in : every respect a capital, one, while the jokes 'introduced (or " gag," as it ia teamed), wero really what they professed to be — funny. This* part of the programme was entirely original, and the matter being novel, the maunev was not so much considered, The corner men per se are not very funny nor very humorous, but succeed by sheor iforce of physical exertion, and that of the wildest kind, in their manipulation^ of the bones and tatubo3, 1 and the questions and answers put into their mouths (which are for the most part decidedly witty, without being in the least coarse or vulgar), in catching the tastes of the^ audience and throwing them into roars of laughter. There are, too, some capital danoers in the company, and Charley Crusoe is undoubtedly tery amusing. • A warrant (sc^ys tin Wellington Argus) has been issued here for the arrest of Arthur Barnesley, lately a olerk in the Telegraph Office herei who is charged with haying forged a telegraph money ordpr for the sum of ten pounds. T,he forgery was a very ingenious one. B.iirriesley filled, up all the forms in a /perfectly regular manner, as if he had ro» ceiv'ed the advice of the order in ordinary course by wire from Dunedin, and, fictitious namea being used, ifc was paid without heeita- : tion by the Ppsfc Office. The fact of its being a forgery was not suspected until the Dune ! din returns cume to bo compared with the Wellington returns. Barnesly^ had^ in the !mean'time left for Sydney r wjiere he actually applied for employment in the Telegraph Department. Telegraphic instructions for his arrest have been sent to Sydney. The Poverty Bay Standard, referring to uneasiness shown by. oome settlers in the district on account of rumours that certain Maories had been in communication with Te !Kooti, and that it was within the limit of probability that unpleasant result^ might I follow, says : — ' The settlers think that they are in a defenceless state should there be any sudden hostilo attack. We oan agsure them this is really not the case. In the first place there are several hundred stands of arms of the best kind, together with abundance of ammunition. Second, that the Militia Act is in ; force ; third, that there is telegraphic con:, munication to all the principal centres of the Colony ; fourth, that we are in close communication with most of the well known friendly tribes j fifth, should Te Kooti or any other chief attempt to make himself and h
followers troublesome, we could bring several thousand armed and disciplined tnen into the bay at a few hours notice, and make it hotter for them than they will care for. The G-o---vernment ia not qnappriscd of all that is going on in the native districts and not unprepared for any emergenoy." The following appeared as special telegrams in the iryell Argus ;— " London 19th June.— The Russians attempted to carry Ears by a Coup de main. They fought a groat battle afterwards, Russian loss 42,402. Turks lost 42,403. Russians winning by one point. — The Turkish " troops in Widdin number about SOjOQp, they ospect an 'increase of 25,000 from Sophia.' (The above is from the Grrey Argus 5 we fancy there is some mistake about Sophia. Its too bud to ohow the girl up ihat way. E. L. A. — (From our own Correspondent). — A. jolly smash yesterday, 50,0.00 Turks taken prisoners and about 10,000 killed, expect the war over sqon as there will be nobody left to fight. — Later.. The Turks have called tenddus for Russian heads : England has sent 2000 Tons p" Powder to Malta ; and ordrrod her Fleet to be in readiness for war. — Sophia's increase ; 2. Twins. She Is tha Daughter. Not the Mother of a Regiment. Grey Argus error."
