THE EXPENSE-SHUN BRIDGE.

[TO THE EDITOR INANGAHUA TIME?.] Sib, — I Ime heard a good deal about this bridge question. Kow, I will just give you my tip on the subject. The Board has not got more money then it knows what to do with, why not then give the right of erecting the bridge to some private person, and let him charge tolls as was done before. The rig t to free occupation of a portion of the river reservo on either side and a free license ought to induce somebody to como to the fore. I don't see why those who require the bridge should not pay for it. They form only a mite of the general body of ratepayers, and I don't see why their wants should be provided for in an ex-» j ceptional way any more than other people. I I am sure more, people travel between j Boatman's and Reefton daily than across the river, and most of them have to wade every stream on the road. It looks very like playing ducks and drakes with the County revenue to go and spend £500 in putting up a bridge, while the rest of the district is left to starve. The ratepayers on the other side of the river contribute about enough rates yearly, I am told, to pay for the Chair»fixing now being put up, and that ought to be made to do them. It ought to do any way for a few months, until we see how the river is going to go, I and as the Board is divided as to which is the best site for the bridge, I suggest a compromise between the parties, by both agreeing to let it stand oven for a time. I am sure that these views will meet with the favor of all the ratepayers. — I am, sir, &c, Common Sexse. Eeefton, June 10th, 18r7.
