THE HERALD SLANDERS.

[TO THE EDITOR INANGAHUA TIMES.] Sib, — It is unusual, even for tbe Herald, who never lets slip an oppo v iu» nil jr to vilify Irish Catholics, to contain such a heterogeneous compound of plaintive jeremiades, malignant sneers, idiotic crilicisims and asinine attempts at put> niog, as appears in this mornings issue. His own remarks and the correspondence ac sufficiently illustrative and contain within themselves obvious replies to bis questions " Why Irishmen manifest go much interest in one of their own country men." "Having a hostile Ireland behind us in our latest and most distant settlement bearing evidence to the energy and self-reliance of our race, &c." A Tier all this pompons arrogance and blaiant assumption, does the Editor of tbe Herald imagine that Irishmen will taooely submit (0 be snubbed, crushed, and reduced to powder by himself and his Coryphceas— bis alter ergo— the council lor who made a cal's«paw of Mr Duncan to gratify his private spleen and vindicate the bigotry of a class at the same time? This district, according to this modest Herald, was not opened up, nor assisted to be opened up, nor assisted to be developed by Irish muscle, brain, or energy* but of this I shall leave your readers to form an opinion. These few remarks may assist the obtuse mental vision of the writer in qnestion to discover the reason of the late Irish manifestation!), &c, for I l:now of no other, and as to " how it was done " perhaps they have some " secret mystic tie" which comes up usefully to them on certain occasions. In conclusion I take the liberty of informing the Hernld his anti-Catholic brethren et hoe genus omnte, that I hope, much as I like to live in peace with mv Protestant fellow citizens, that I shall never live to see the day when my countrymen will lick tbe band that strikes them. Yours &c, An Ibishmak, but n» bigot. Reeftou, February 20th, 1877.
