THE LATE ELECTION.

[to the editoe inanoahua times.] Sib,— The calm deliberate manner with which your contemporary slanders Irishmen, and particularly Catholics, in bis article of yesterday with reference to tbe late election, is a matter that cannot be allowed to pass unnoticed. In all probability the passing of a day without a startling untruth in reference to the Pope Oi' the Church which he is supreme bead over, is a day lost. As will be seen in yesterday's columns when referring to " another hostile Ireland " we are about j to form in this new and remote country. I regret much the persistent attempts on , the part of the Herald to awaken national { and religious animosity amongst such a j small and law-abiding community as ours, where honesty and industry is equally rewarded, and where there are happy homes p.nd loving neighbours who are always wiiling to assist each other if in need, no matter what country gave them birth. We have heard of disease eating up a person, and to such a consuming hatred have (he anti- Irish prejudices of ihe free thought organ of Lower Broadway grown, and as it has lived, so it will expire. The ! scenes enacted during its latter days are unparallelled in the history of newspaper writing, I am only sorry that David Duncan ever allowed himself to be mixed up in thi3 election with such a clique of intriguers, whose antecedents are already too well known, or the result of tbe poll might have been different. With reference to the scurrilous letter of " Critic," it seems the same hallucination has taken hold of him; putridity is moving from the members to the vital organs, tbe constitution has become corrupt, and the emasculated figure wbich remains is sickening and pitiable. I subscribe myself, Hibebnian. Black's Point, February 20th, 1877.
