HOW THE CYCLE PICKET WAS SLUGGED
Fellow-Worker Williams, the Waterside Worker Cycle Picket, who was slugged by specials just inside the Auckland Domain on Wednesday, November 12, is very slowly re-
covering, and was able to leave the private hospital on cruches on Monday. It appears that he had been on picket duty at the Exhibition, and was riding back to the Trades Hall, via Stanley Street, to report. He had been accosted bv one of the individuals near v
the Exhibition gate, a few words had been ex- ; changed, and Williams was under the impression that the affair had ended. He was riding slowly/ down the hill, free-wheel, and was near the gate when a squad of mounted specials suddenly overtook him, and he had scarcely time to glance round and see the whole width of the drive taken up by the Cossacks, when his shoulder was brushed by a saddle, and a sudden blow on the back of the head rendered him unconscious. When lie regained consciousness the next day at the hospital he was in great pain, and lost consciousness again until Friday afternoon. Severe injuries were inflicted on the lower part of the spine and testicles, which resulted in agonising pain and swellings. /The victim was in grave danger for the first two days, but owing to a strong constitution is steadily recovering. The worst blows were evidently delivered by some murderous weapon when FellowWorker Williams was down and unconscious. He told bis story to our representative with great difficulty.
