BLOCKING FREE SPEECH IN CH. CH.
The only happening of interest to rebels is the fight the Passive Resisters’ Union is putting up against persecution by the military and police. Williams, Beary and Denton (the latter of whom has been ordered to find a surety of £2O that he will keep the peace for three months, because he said that the police are liars) are bearing the brunt of the struggle. Twelve persons, including this scribe, spoke at the clock tower on a Saturday night recently, and all but three have been fined £2 and costs. Those fined include P. C. Webb, £2; E. J. Howard, £2; F. Burgovne, £2; J. McCullough, £2; C. S. Beary, £5; H. Denton, £4. The police took no names, relying on pimps for the necessary information, so three or four were not prosecuted.
Unionism is being chloroformed by the politicians, so there is nothing to relate about industrial unrest.—J.S.R.
