That Irresponsible Again
The antiquated method of removing refuse by hand and cart still operates in Auckland. We had the bad luck the other night to w alk right into the political expression of the contents of one of these vehicles, and though it was only a “ mere reflection,” it was. like most Parliamentary expressions," very malodorous. It was Parliamentary because it talked industriously. Its politico-econo-mic argument was grim(i)ly logical, too. for it said in plain terms that it was no use beating the air and trying to argue back. The more we opened our mouths the louder it seemed to talk. It said 've must either remove the economic cause or get outside the political effect- -that we would have to do something. So we took political action by ducking down a side street.
When we had recovered 1 asked my ” comrade” (who is a “doublets inger ') if lie would advocate the erecting of au electric fan at the back of each bouse to deal with the political side of the trouble so as to help the Direct Aetionists (navyies. etc.) to inaugurate a better economic system (drains). He said one might do worse. So I asked liim how can a wage-slave get out of Ihe reflection of Capitalism. He said ” join the Benighted Proffesoratioii of Bra vers, amend the Arbitration Act, and save op, and by 1963 you will be able to go to Mars on an airship, as an assisted emigrant, or,” he added as an afterthought, if you haven’t enough you could stow' away.”—'The Irresponsible.
