ADDRESS BY MISSIONER
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —Your report in to-day issue concerning the “Special Anzac Service” conducted by the Rev. F. A. Thompson contains an apparently unfortunate reference to that great number of worthy citizens) who are conscripted for war service. The missioner is reported to have said that “the men of Australia and New Zealand would nave scorned to wait, in the spirit of the cynical, selfseeking* shirker, for conscription.”
As, reported, it is surely an unfortunate phrase to attribute to anyone claiming to be enlightened and Christian; it smacks of the jingoistic verbiage of a less enlightened generations. I trust this will provide the missioner with an opportunity, before the close of his mission, of assuring youi* readers that his remarks did not imply any tinge of discredit to those who serve under conscription.—l am, etc., READER. Paeroa, 26:4:44.
