FARM FLOODED

PROTEST TO THE BOARD j FURTHER OUTLET WANTED WATER FROM HIGHER UP A request for permission to put a set of 9in. or 12in. pipes through the stop-bank to give him an outlet into the river was made by Mr I. R. Bennett of Kerepeehi to the April meeting- of the Hauraki United Drainage Board. Mr Bennett in a letter to the board explained that the Bagnall-Ansford drain and the road drain flooded his property every winter as his own drains instead of serving their purpose merely acted as reservoirs for the board’s storm water. “The position at present is that I am paying rates to the board to be flooded out every winter. As 1 I am on the bottom end of the drains I get all the water from as far up as Kerepeehi and as the board is having the drains cleaned at present that has the effect of letting the water down here much quicker. If the tide is in and the floodgate shut I get the lot,” wrote Mr Bennett. He pointed but that wet weather was due in the near future and asked for an early decision from the board. He also asked for some material or financial assistance if the board agreed to his request. The chairman, Mr C..K. Fox, said that there was a drain on either side of the property which should give him ample drainage. There would be a slight hold-up while the tide was in. He did not think the suggestion of a further outlet would be much use. Mr E. B. Hill suggested that if Mr Bennett flapped his own drains he would get relief. Others agreed that this would give more relief than a new outlet. It was decided that the chairman, Mr C. K. Fox and the foreman meet Mr Bennett to discuss the position.
