WOMEN’S R.S.A.

MEETING IN COROMANDEL ELECTION OF OFFICERS CLUBROOM TO BE OPENED A general meeting of mothers and near relatives of returned servicemen and women was held in the County Council Chambers, Coromandel, on Saturday, April 1, Mrs Murphy presiding and Mrs Lucas acting as secretary pro tern. There was a good representative gathering and the meeting proved successful and enthusiastic. Officers for the ensuing year for this newly-formed branch of the Returned Servicemen’s Association were elected as follows: —President, Mrs E. French; secretary, Mrs McKinley; committee, Mesdames Murphy, Purdom, Lucas, Bridle. It was stated that one of the main objects of this section of the R.S.A. will be to attend to the social side of the main’R.S.A., i.e., organising the supper arrangements for dances and other such entertainments.

Among the first activities of the section it is hoped shortly to start a clubroom for servicemen and women, subject to the approval of the R.S.A. An inspection is to be made of certain buildings for this purpose and a drive instituted to collect games, books, cutlery, furniture, etc., for the furnishing of the club. A canteen will be run by voluntary helpers and it is hoped that the public will rally to the support of the project which it is felt is badly needed in Coromandel. Dances, card evenings and Paddy’s markets were suggested as means of raising funds for the equipment of the club. Several ladies offered their homes for card evenings for the winter months.

It was decided to hold a monthly meeting on the third Saturday in each month.
