MAORIS MEET
GATHERING AT NEW BRIGHTON APPOINTMENT OF EXECUTIVE A large gathering of Maoris was held at the meeting house at New Brighton on Sunday, April 23, when representatives of all the tribes throughout the Coromandel, Thames, Waihi and Whangamata districts were present. Captain Werohia the liaison officer for the whole of the district was present and acted as chairman of the meeting. A full address on the man-power position as it affects the Maori registrants in essential work was given by the District Man-Power Officer, Mr R. W. Chappell. The ‘address covered the actual position of registrants directed dealing with the rights and powers of the Industrial Man-Power Legislation, covering terminations and liabilities under the absenteeism regulations. Details were given of many of the essential works in which members, of the various tribes had been directed. At the. close of the address Mr Chappell stated he would welcome any questions. Many questions were asked and were dealt with to the satisfaction of the members present.
Captain Werohia then called for names in dealing - with the appointment of the new executive when the voting resulted ini the following appointments:— Chairman, Mr S. Tukikino, 'Paeroa tribe; secretary, Mr S. Hira, Kerikeri tribe; treasurer, Mr Ngawiki, Paeroa tribe.
