PIONEER PASSES

MRS LUCY MAUD MORRISON RESIDENT OF HIKUTAIA EARLY DAYS IN THE VALLEY When the death of Mrs Lucy Maud Morrison occurred on April 14 at the residence of her* elder daughter, Mrs R. M. Hutchinson, of Turua, another old, well-known and highly-respected resident of Thames Valley passed away. .Born at Thames in 1870 Mrs Morrison was a daughter of the late Mr and Mrs John Stevens who were well known in business and as hotelkeepers in the early days of the Thames Valley and Waihi. Mrs Morrison, in her younger’ days was postmistress both at Hikutaia and Wharepoa and in 1806 married Mr Robert Ritchie Morrison, a member of a well-known Hikutaia family. After her marriage she lived in .both the North and South Islands, Mr Mor- ' rison being mine manager in a number of districts. During last war he was in charge at the Blackwater Gold Mines Ltd., Waiuta, Westland, where Mrs Morrison, took a very active part in all patriotic work. Back To Hikutaia Mr and Mrs Morrison returned to the North Island in 1920 and commenced farming at Hikutaia. Some years later they retired to Thames where Mr Morrison died in 1934. Since then Mrs Morrison has spent her time with the various members of her family. She is survived by a son, Mr Howard Morrison, of Hikutaia and two daughters, Mrs R. M- Hutchinson of Turua and Miss J. A. Morrison of Auckland. The funeral which took place from St. Mary’s Church, Hikutaia, was a large and representative one, the service being conducted at the church by Arch-Deacon W. G. H. Weadon, who also performed the last rites at the graveside at the Omahu Cemetery. The floral tributes were both numerous and beautiful.
