THE Hauraki Plains Gazette With which is Incorporated THE OHINEMURI GAZETTE. MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, FRIDAY. “Public Service.” MONDAY, APRIL 17, 1944. PUBLIC WARNED

On a number of recent occasions the public have been officially warned of the danger of tampering with unexploded missiles or with explosive devices which may be found near military camps, or in districts where military manoeuvres have taken place. There have been several accidents, some causing fatalities, as a result of dangerous material of this kind coming into the hands of children, and only recently in the Wellington district a boy was painfully injured when he attempted to prise open a detonator—one of several left in a paddock by servicemen who had been practising with explosives. Seemingly there is need for parents and teachers- to pass on to children the warnings which have been given, and to emphasise the folly of running risks with any 'suspicious-looking objects that may be found in the course of play. At the same time the military authorities will be expected by the public t ? take every precaution against the careless discarding or abandonment of explosives. There could and should be such supervision of the use of explosives, such as detonators, as would minimise the possibility of live material being thrown on one side, or missiles which have failed to explode being left where they fell to become a possible death-trap for the ignorant or unwary.
