A RELIGIOUS THOUGHT
the way of peace. Christian peace and serenity do not consist in exemption from trouble and difficulty. They are not found in flight from one’s immediate environment or escape from present circumstances the method of the hermit or recluse. The tranquillity which Christ promises to His followers is an inward experience, not an outward condition; it is calmness of mind, quietude of spirit amid the distractions, disappointments, and dangers of life, not freedom from suffering and sorrow and hardship. It is in the school of discipline that patience is learned and character perfected, and in the process the learned who is taught of Christ may know “the peace that passeth understanding,” and may gain the victory through Him Who said, “In the world ye shall have tribulation, but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.”
