PATRIOTIC AFFAIRS

MEETING IN COROMANDEL WORK FOR 1944 APPEAL The initial meeting of the newlyformed Coromandel Patriotic SubCommittee was held on Friday night, March 24, in the county council meeting room when there were present Mesdames Tarrant-Hoskins, Inglis, Peachey, Whittle and Messrs Benham, Ward, Lillis, Willett and the secretary of the inter-zone committee, Mr J. H. Lucas, as convener. Mr Lucas read apologies received from Mrs Anderson and Mr Knight who had declined nomination on the committee. Mr Lucas gave a short resume of the regulations under which the committee would have to work and stated the object to work for in this 1944 appeal for funds being over £l4OO over the whole county.

Nominations were then called for the position of chairman which resulted in Mr A. H. Benham beingelected to the position.

Mr Benham in returning thanks for the confidence placed in him said he had thought that a direct appeal to the people if properly organised and carried through should provide the amount of money to honour the obligation placed upon the committee. He considered that if 400 people would guarantee Is per week or £2 10s per year the committee would attain its objective without it being any hardship on anyone.

The main work'for the committee would therefore -be in getting in contact with the people and obtain the necessary promises. In the meantime in- order to give a boost to the year’s patriotic effort it was decided to hold a Paddy’s market.

Mr Mannion Snr., donated a handsome teakwood ship’s cask to the committee which was the subject of a resolution of thanks. It is anticipated to raffle this cask which is now on display in Mr H. A. Rowse’s shop window and should by that means produce a goodly sum to the funds.
