LONG SERVICE

MR W. E. GUNN RETIRING PRESENTATION MADE 24} YEARS WITH P.W. DEPT. Thirty members of the Paeroa Public Works staff met on Thursday, March 30, at their office to farewell Mr W. E. Gunn who is retiring from the department after 24i years of service. Mr M. J. Thomas, engineer in charge opened the gathering making a few remarks on the subject of the loss the department was suffering by the retirement of Mr Gunn. Commenting on the number of his friends in the service in that four of them had made the trip from Auckland to join them in the function, Mr Thomas then called on Mr D. R. Williams of the Auckland staff who was in charge in Paeroa earlier to say a few words on behalf of those earlier days. Mr Williams supported the previous remarks made on the sterling character of Mr Gunn.

Thornton, district engineer, Auckland, carried the gathering back to the days when he was resident engineer in Paeroa and’ was able to give many instances of the wonderful service which a man of Mr Gunn’s character had given to the department. Summing up his remarks by the statement that if the department had a few more of “Bill’s” type, the heads would have very little to worry about when it came to efficient working of plant, etc. He then called on Miss- Keegan to hand to Mr Gunn a wristlet watch and to accept on behalf of Mrs Gunn a hanging mirror so that they could both see what a fine fellow “Bill” was

During afternoon tea. all present took the opportunity to personally wish their old fellow member long life and happiness.
