LONG SERVICE ENDS
CHIEF POSTMASTER RETIRES BEGAN CAREER AT THAMES Mr William Arthur Sawyer, chief postmaster for the Thames district, retired from the service on Friday with the unique distinction of having ended his career as the head of the office where he 'began it. Mr Sawyer was appointed' to the staff of the Thames Post Office on May 13, 1901. He was transferred to Waihi as a cadet in 1904 and later served in Auckland l , the Waikato district, North Auckland and then went back to Auckland. His first position as postmaster followed appointment to that office at Bluff on December 1, 1921, and later he served as'postmaster for varying periods at Leeston, Palmerston South, Waipawa, Marton and Hawera, returning to Thames as chief postmaster after an absence of between 37 and 38 years. A presentation to Mr Sawyer from the Post Office staff was made Friday afternoon. Mr F. J. R. Gibens, who will be acting-chief postmaster till Mr E. J. Cleary, of Stratford, arrives after Easter, came to Thames on Thursday and took up his duties on Friday.
