GOLF IN PAEROA
PAST SEASON REVIEWED 36TH. ANNUAL REPORT FINANCES IN HEALTHY STATE The thirty-sixth report of the Paeroa Golf Club presented to the annual meeting recently by the president, Mr A. E. Day, disclosed that the club’s revenue accounts and 'balance are in a very healthy state in spite of abnormal conditions. The report continues as under:— The playing season opened on April 18 and closed on October 16, the condition of the greens and fairways displaying distinct improvement and progress with use and development. Owing principally to transport difficulties, no inter-club games were played, although a most successful patriotic tournament was organised and resulted in a net gain of £42. I much regret this absence of club visiting which in normal years is one of the most pleasing features of our activities. Present events point to the possibilities of a more or less early resumption of these matches. Membership Maintained Membership was well maintained, considering the times, our roll, at the end of the season showing a total membership of 86, including nine members in the forces. Life members, 2 men, 4 ladies; playing, 31 men, 35 ladies; junior, 3 ladies; non-playing-members, 10. Competitions were well contested, a high standard of play being maintained. In the men’s championship it was pleasing to see a fresh member come to the front in Mr H. Morgan. Men’s championships: Senior, Mr H. Morgan; junior, Mr P. R. Hubbard. Ladies’ championships: Senior Mrs L. Jones; junior, Mrs G. Bain. Men’s handicaps: Senior, Mr J. Bartlett; junior, Mr A. Carroll. Ladies’ handicap: Mrs 0. Lewis; runner-up, Mrs J. Old. Ladies’ rosebowl: Mrs P. Finlay. L.G.U. bronze medal: Mrs P. Jennings. L.G.U. silver medal, Mrs L. Jones. Waitemata cup: Mr tP. R. Hubbard. Development Work No major work involving a large capital outlay was undertaken. Notwithstanding, steady, work conducive to good playing conditions and the future development of the links was carried out. The area west of the main swamp was levelled and sown and has resulted in a fine take. Greens were constructed and laid, down in lawn grasses at the same time. Four new greens on the road frontage have been attended to and will give improved playing conditions this season. Further swamp development was done west of the old No. 3 green, this piece carrying two fairways when the full 18-hole course is in use. This was done at a cost of £l6 10s. * Once again we are indebted to Mr Johnstone and Mr Thorp for their valuable work and experience given so freely for the club’s benefit. We likewise express our appreciation to those numerous members who assisted’ so efficiently during the working 'bees. We are under a deep obligation to the ladies for co-operating so fully in all club activities and particularly in their care of the club rooms and teas. Thanks are due to those members who placed their cars at the disposal of earless members in reaching and returning from the links.
