NO RESTRICTION
SPEED ON COAST ROAD POLICY OF DEPARTMENT ADVICE FROM COMMISSIONER Advice that a speed limit could not be placed on populated areas of the Thames coastal road was received from the Commissioner of Transport, Mr G. L. Laurensen, at the March meeting of the Thames County Council. The council at its previous meeting decided to ask that a speed limit of 26 miles an hour ibe placed on •these areas. The Commissioner replied that it was the policy of the Transport Department to eliminate any special speed limit, except for .built-up .areas, but the general rule was that motorists must not travel at a speed which might be dangerous to the public. He was accordingly not able to recommend that the Minister impose a special limit in these areas, but would instruct his inspectors to go into the question of additional signposting of the areas and would also tell the local traffic inspector to keep a check on the speeds of motorists through the coast settlements. The clerk, Mr D. Mackay, said Mr Lautensen had visited Thames recently and had gone into the matter. It was not possible to obtain a special speed limit under SO miles an hour. Cr. E. J. McLoughlin said 30 miles an hour was too fast. The chairman, Mr D. Courtney, said 30 miles an hour was a limit, but motorists were not allowed to travel above a safe speed. The letter was received.
