COROMANDEL INSTITUTE NEW MEMBERS ELECTED RESULTS OF COMPETITIONS The ordinary meeting of the 'Coromandel ibranch of the Women’s Institute was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall on Wednesday, March 8. Mrs Anderson presided over a very good attendance of members. The meeting opened with the Institute Prayer, after which Mrs Anderson apologised for the absence of the president, Mrs D. Strongman who was on the’sick list. u The federation president’s monthly letter was read and also one from the new Dominion president. Four new members were proposed and accepted for membership with acclamation. The roll call, “ The most useful thing in the kitchen and why,” was well answered and caused a lot of fun. Results of competitions were as follow: — Tray cloth.—Mrs Riley 1, Mrs D. Strongman 2. [ Girdle scones.—Mrs Inglis (only entry). Dahlias.—Mrs Anderson (only entry). Lemon cheese. —Mrs 'Gilliver (only entry). Beans.—Mrs McKenzie 1, Mrs E. | James 2, Mrs McKinlay 3. Appliqued apron.—Mrs McKenzie (only entry).
ANNUAL MEETING ELECTION OF OFFICERS The annual meeting of the Coromandel Women’s Institute was held on Wednesday, March 8, the secretary, Miss G. Russell; reading a most interesting and well-written report on the year’s workings. An increase in membership was shown, in spite of several members leaving the district. Some interesting lectures had been given and the link with Bishop Auckland Institute in the north of England had been kept up. Several children’s nightgowns had been made up by members and given to the local hospital. Gifts had been sent to the lepers at Makogai and a box of goods was sent to the Victoria League Fair held in Auckland. The efforts in aid of patriotic funds were excellent, but the handcraft section was down and members were urged to take part in this part of the institute’s activities for the ensuing year. The roll calls had been well answered and added a happy note to the evening’s meeting. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Miss Russell for her splendid re- I port. A similar summary by the president of the year’s work was read by Miss Russell. In it Mrs Strongman expressed her* thanks to the committee and the members for their support and co-operation. They had all worked so well together. A vote of thanks was carried by acclamation. The financial report and balancesheet were read by the treasurer, Mrs Inglis and showed a substantial increase on the credit side. The bal-ance-sheet was read and duly adopted. A vote of thanks was passed to the treasurer for her report, also to Miss Mitchell, honorary auditor. Carried by acclamation. The results of the year’s points competitions were as under: —-Mrs Anderson 55, Mrs Inglis 55, Mrs King 52. Wall competitions.—Mrs McKenzie 32, Mrs Gilliver 30, Mrs Inglis 30. The election of officers resulted as follows: — President, Mrs D. Strongman, unanimously re-elected for sixth year; committee, Mesdames Battson, Dear, Anderson, Gilliver, Strongman, McKinley, Inglis, Deeble, R. Turner and Misses Deeble, Russell and Anderson; vice-presidents, Mesdames Anderson and Battson; secretary, Mrs McKinley; treasurer, Mrs Inglis re-elected unanimously for fifth year. • A hearty vote of thanks was passed to Miss Russell for her work as secretary for the past four years and carried by acclamation. which the National Anthem was sung, bringing a happy evening to a close. COROGLEN INSTITUTE I — ANNUAL MEETING HELD The attendance was only fair at the annual meeting of the Coroglen Women’s Institute held' recently. The election of officers resulted as under: — President, Mrs Hare; vice-presi-Miss K. Hodge and Mrs R. Hodge; secretary, Mrs E. Hamilton; treasurer, Miss C. Jorgensen; committee, Mrs Hare, Mrs Hamilton, Miss Jorgensen, Mrs Hodge, Miss Hodge, Mrs C. Minifie, Mrs W. Feilding, Mrs Gordon. The winner of the flower competition points prize, was Miss Jorgensen with 17 points for the year, Two scarves were received for the Merchant Navy and 12oz. wool for patriotic knitting was distributed. . To stimulate interest among members it was decided to have a points competition for members submitting a programme, demonstration or a competition. Judging will be by popular vote. Any member who promised | to contribute in any way and failed to do so, for no good reason, to forfeit all points already gained. In regard to the library it was decided to raise the subscription to 6s per year in order to pay the librarian a small fee for her services. i The report on the year’s activities stated that delegates had (been sent to the conference and a flower show and Christmas tree had been held. Knitting for the Merchant Navy had resulted in the following articles being sent forward:—Five pairs gloves, two pullovers, four scarves. Patriotic knitting has been as under:—Three scarves, one pair socks; one pair mittens, two balaclavas. Donations had included £3 16s given to the patriotic fund and £3 5s to the Makogai lepers. Miss K. Hodge on behalf of members presented lovely bouquets to the president, secretary and treasurer, who suitably responded. Members enjoyed at afternoon tea a piece of the birthday cake of the Mercury Bay Women’s Institute. The flower competition resulted:— Mrs Hare 3 points, Miss Jorgensen 2, Mrs G. R. Hodge 1. After the usual votes of thanks the meeting closed with the singing of the National Anthem.
