AWAITI-TIROHIA
ROAD COMPLETION URGED PIAKO COUNTY COUNCIL GRANT TO BE APPLIED FOR The completion of the Awaiti- Tirohia Road was discussed at the March meeting of the Piako County Council when a decision was made to inform the settlers concerned that on the payment of £5O previously mentioned the work would be completed, and further, that application was being made to the Minister for a free grant to finish the road. Cr. Stewart, as the riding member concerned, reported having met the settlers. Shortly after the motion was passed in the terms indicated above, Mr J. J. Shallue, a ratepayer and member of the Ohinemuri County Council waited on the council. He was informed that a free grant was being applied for and therefore the matter might ‘be some time in being settled. Mr. Shallue said that the road should not be discussed in the same light as an ordinary one affecting the accesss of a few settlers. - It was a link between two counties and opened up a whole new district. Free grants had been obtained for similar roads*in other counties and he urged on behalf of the ratepayers that the application for a grant for the work be gone on with. It was also decided that Messis Sutherland and Thorn M.’sP. be informed of the request to the Minister for a free grant, and that the matter be brought to the notice of adjoining counties.
