TO STOP FLOODS
AN OVERFLOW FLOODGATE ’ THAMES MAN’S DESIGN , DEVICE THOROUGHLY TESTED Plans for an improved floodgate have .been devised by Mr D. R. Fisher, of Thames, who has forwarded the details to the press in view of the account which appeared recently of drainage difficulties at Mangaiti and representations which have been made to Mr J. Thorn, M.P., about the matter. Mr Fisher has written to Wellington to have his plans registered and patented. When farms are flooded and the floodgates are closed and the water cannot get away, he hopes his device will solve the problem, let the water away and prevent overflowing of drain stopbanks | Good Results Obtained The idea is described as simple and has, Mr Fisher says, been given a thorough testing and no fault can be found with it in any way. Under present conditions, water banks up in drains when the floodgates are closed, especially if there has been steady, rain, and if the tide happens to be in the water cannot get away and keeps banking up in the drains, consequently overflowing the drains. Mr Fisher’s idea is to have overflow floodgates above the main floodgates so that when the main drain floodgate is closed the overflow floodgates will open as soon as the bankedup drain water reaches them, thus releasing the water and preventing it from overflowing over the drain stopbanks.
