GARDEN FETE

FUNCTION HELD AT PIPIROA AN ENJOYABLE OUTING The garden fete which was to have •been held in the spacious grounds of Mr J. Brown’s residence on March 4, owing to weather conditions, was held in the Pipiroa Hall, there being present about 100 people. Under the able supervision of Mr Walker the hall was soon transformed •into a bazaar and the stalls arranged down the centre of the hall were well laden and the ladies responsible for this display of goods are to be coni gratulated on their effort, j The stage was a bower of flowers I and at 12 o’clock the president of j the Pipiroa Women’s Institute, Mrs ' E. Scott, introduced Mrs Sawer, presij dent of the Auckland District Federation who had graciously consented j to open the fete. i Mrs Sawer in her own inimitable ! way declared the fete opened and hoped the day would be a profitable and enjoyable one for all. Mrs Scott then presented Mrs •Sawer with a beautiful shoulder spray. Competitions were the order of the day but unfortunately all of the outi door competitions had to be cancelled owing to the inclement weather. However a nail-driving competition proved a great success and Mrs Walker had a busy time managing it. Prizes were won by:—Young ladies, Nola Hayward. Married ladies, Mrs J. Clark and Mrs Tatton. Boys, Keith Scott. Men, E. Scott and F. Tatton. A candle-lighting contest was won by Mrs Manning (Maramarua), 23 candles, with Conoi* Keane lb, second. A sheep donated by Mr Donald Dalgety was won by Mr H. Schwarz who guessed 7831 b. as the weight (correct 791 b.). A pair of drakes, number of peas in bottle, was won by Mr Joe Brown, 454 (440). The highlight of the day for the children was the search for Mr Spondulicks (Mrs D. Waite, Ngatea). This mysterious person was found by Joe Brown Jnr., who received a book prize. The names of stallholders who all proved keen businesswomen were as ; follows:—Needlework and novelty i stall, Mrs A. McAuley, assisted by ; Jean Dalgety; toys and children’s dips, Miss A. Paul; sweets, Mrs E.

Marshall, assisted by Norma Boakes; produce, Mesdames A. Powell, M. Gardner and A. Tatton; adult dips, Mrs Walker; cakes, Mrs A. Rogers; drinks, Mrs Schwarz; luncheon tables, Mesdames Don Dalgety, I. Mangan and M. Grbic.
