NEEDED ON ROADS
ERECTION OF STANDS LETTER TO COUNCIL QUESTION OF RESPONSIBILITYt The" question of the erection of cream stands along main roads was discussed at the March meeting o the Ohinemuri County Council when the Te Aroha-Thames Valley Co-op-erative Dairy Company Ltd., wrote offering to take out an insurance policy indemnifying the council against any claim which might arise. The letter from the company read as under: — “This company has been considering the question of requiring farmers to ‘build suitable cream stands adjacent to the main roads to obviate the necessity of our contractors having to lift heavy weights of cream from the road level. We understand that the county ’ councils are vested with the care and management of all county road but that you would be prepared to’ allow the erection of cream stands on the main highways in positions to be approved by your representatives provided you obtain some form of indemnity from the dairy company or its suppliers. We presume an insurance policy indemnifying you against any claims would be satisfactory.
“We would like to have your views on this matter as soon as convenient. The chairman, Mr T. A. Barret, agreed that cream stands were necessary and that contractors could not be expected to lift heavy cans up on to lorries from the ground.
After a little discussion it was agreed that no objection be raised 1 by the council to cream stands on, condition that the dairy company indemnify the council. All work would have to be carried out to the satisfaction of the engineer.
