TOO MUCH RAGWORT
COMPLAINT FROM NETHERTON LETTER TO OHINEMURI COUNTY That ragwort had been flowering in profusion in the Ohinemuri County near the Waihou river was reported by the Netherton branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union to the March meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council. The letter from Netherton read as under:— “At a recent meeting of this branch I was directed to draw the attention of your council to the ragwort flowering in profusion on private property on the eastern side of the Ngararahi cut of the Waihou river. This is only the width of the river and stop-bank from five Pukaku road settlers who have 'been very careful in preventing any plants frem flowering. We would request that your council would take appropriate action in the interests of all concerned before the seed heads start to fly.” The engineer, Mr L. E. Shaw, explained that this area had been leased to a settler in the past. He had noticed the noxious weeds and had instructed the leasee to clear but had been advised that nobody was using the land to-day. He added that he had sent a gang down to clean the area up.
