EVENING SPORTS MEETING ATHLETICS ON DOMAIN KEEN INTEREST OF PUBLIC A large crowd of spectators last Wednesday evening witnessed some excellent racing at the weekly sports meeting conducted by the Paeroa Harrier Club on the Paeroa Domain. One of the main attractions of the programme was the Jockeys’ 440yds. Special Invitation Scratch Race. A field of some 10 ; starters was sent away to a good start. After 100’ yards was travelled one competitor was seen to make a dash from last to first hut his run was soon stopped as he received a severe check and was l soon in the rear of the field. Into the straight they raced with little separating the first six. The spurs were soon ibeing used and the whips cracking as all made every effort to gain supremacy. The crowd roared its approval as the announcer, mentioning the names of several prominent racehorses, gave a running commentary down the straight. The excitement was tense as they neared the finishing line, the spectators (barracking on their particular favourite. The judge’s placings were W. Cox 1, W. Angus 2, W. Caddy 3. Distance between first, second and’ third, was a head each way. The ladies’ relay was a close finish between Commerce Four, Railway and a team from Ngatea.
