SPREADING RAPIDLY
TALL FESCUE ON PLAINS GROWTH ALONG THE ROADSIDE The rapid spread of tall fescue on the Hauraki Plains was referred to by Mr Roy Green at the monthly meeting of the Hauraki United Drainage Board. He urged that all the roads should be cut at least twice a year, stating that fescue was becoming a real menace on the Plains. The chairman, Mr C. K. Fox, said the fescue was being spread by vehicles. The seed was caught on the vehicles and carried to other parts of the Plains. Mr D. G. McMillan said that the Hauraki Plains County Council had considered the question of declaring tall fescue a noxious weed but had found it too big a question. Mr Fox agreed that cutting would stop the tall fescue seeding and spreading. After considerable discussion it was decided to refer the matter to the Hauraki Plains County Council, recommending that the tall fescue be cut once or twice a year to prevent it spreading. Mr McMillan added that the fescue was now spreading thickly into the Netherton district.
