DAMAGE TO WHARF

LETTER to THE COUNCIL POSITION AT HIKUTAIA SHIPPING COMPANY’S REPLY The question of damage done to the Hikutaia wharf was again discussed at the March meeting of the Ohinemuri County Council when a letter was received from the Noithern Steamship Company, Ltd., suggesting that the council was confusing the Hikutaia wharf with the Wharepoa wharf. The letter from the general manager of the Northern Steam Ship Company read as under: — “We have to acknowledge receipt of your letter dated February 28 in reply to ours of December 24 and ; 30, regarding the condition of the Hikutaia wharf. We have read your letter with some surprise especially in view -of the report of Captain Raynes our master who is mostly in the 'Paeroa trade. Opinion Of The Captain “The writer has had another discussion with the captain this morning, who has read your letter, and he still affirms that practically no re-

pairs have been done to the Hikutaia wharf for a number of years, and he feels sure that you are mistaking the Hikutaia wharf for the Wharepoa wharf which some little time ago was put in order and a good' amount of work was done on it. “We suggest that you make further inquiries into this whole matter.” Laughter* greeted, the above letter, Cr. G. A. Avery commenting that he had seen repairs being done to the Hikutaia wharf himself. The county engineer, Mr L. E. Shaw, stated that the wharf had l been in a satisfactory condition until damaged by a 'boat. The council, he added, had spent quite a lot of money on the wharf some little time ago. There was, he stated, no mistake regarding the wharf as the Wharepoa wharf was in the Thames County. The county clerk, Mr A. A. Jenkinson, was instructed) to write assuring the shipping company that the council had not made a mistake Regarding the wharf.
