SUPPORT OF COUNCIL LOCAL BODY ELECTIONS MR EDWIN EDWARDS TO STAND Assurance of support in his candidature for the office of Mayor of Paeroa at the local body elections m May were given the 3 Mayor, Mr Edwin Edwards ’by councillors at the monthly meeting of the Paeroa Borough Council. The deputy-Mayor, Mr H. M. Shand said he was very pleased to hear that Mr Edwards was going to again stand for the office of Mayor of Paeroa and assured him of the support of the council. Personally he had thought of retiring but as so many of the younger men were away he v as prepared to carry on if elected to the council. Messrs W. Smith, B. Gwilliam and E. Moore had previously stated that they would not be offering their services at the next election. Mr D. G. McMillan stated his pleasure at learning that Mr Edwards was again, offering his services to the borough. Mr Edwards, he said, had filled a difficult position with credit in spite of the abnormal conditions which were ruling to-day. He assured him of the support of the council as well as from the general public. During his term in office the Mayor had always been just in his rulings, continued Mr McMillan, adding that personally he might not be offering his services again to the borough. He explained that he was not now living in the borough although he still held property there. He said l he considered it his duty to stand down in the circumstances if sufficient candidates were offering to fill the council. Mr B. Gwilliam also expressed pleasure at the news that Mr Edwards . was standing again for the office of Mayor of Paeroa. Mr Edwards, he added, had filled the position he had held during the past four years with credit. He paid a special tribute to the Mayoress, Mrs Edwards, stating that her work, especially in patriotic activities had been very good indeed. Messrs F. Sparks and J. Walmsley had previously indicated that they would be again offering their services but Mr C. C. Webb did not disclose his intentions.
