HIGHER BIRTHRATE
COUNTRIES IN EUROPE INCREASE SINCE WAR STARTED Despite wartime hardships—enemy oppression, starvation, malnutrition — nearly all countries in Europe had a higher birthrate in 1942 than in 1941. Notable exceptions were Germany and Italy. In England, Denmark; Holland and Hungary the birthrate was the highest since the war started in 1939. In Germany it dropped from 20.4 per 1000 in 1939 to 14.9 in 1942.
