EMPTY HOUSES

POSITION IN THE COUNTRY STATEMENT IN PARLIAMENT Criticism of a statement made recently in the House of Representatives by a Labour Party member was voiced by 'Mr C. Townshend of Netherton at a meeting of farmers held in Paeroa on Monday, Mr Townshend contending that the statement was far from correct. Mr Townshend said that listening to the debate in Parliament recently he had heard a Labour member say that farmers had not taken advantage of offers of assistance to build suitable houses for employees and this was fully responsible for the labour shortage in the country districts to-day. Yet, continued Mr Townshend, in the Hauraki Plains Gazette on the same day was a report of the Thames Valley Electric Power Board meeting which recorded a fall in the consumption of electricity due to the large number of sharemilkers’ cottages which were vacant at present.
