The Useful Skylark
Although the skylark is anathema to many farmers,” says a contributor to "Forest and Bird,” yet it is really a useful bird. It shows a fondness for sprouting seed, especially of the turnip variety, but Old Country farmers believe this thinning-out of seedlings to have a decidedly beneficial effect on the crop. A case is quoted where, in the North Island, wholesale poisoning of skylarks was followed by a disastrous plague of ea terpillars.
