PLEASANT DAY INSTITUTE BIRTHDAY COROMANDEL FUNCTION VISITORS FROM MERCURY BAY I A very pleasant day was spent on March 2 by members and friends of the Coromandel Women’s Institute in honour of their 13th. birthday. Owing to bad weather the gathering was held in St. George’s Hall instead! of at Long Bay as intended. The president, ' Mrs Strongman, read the institute prayer, then welcomed visitors. The ode to friendship was sung and a letter read from the Ahimia Women’s Institute expressing regret at not being able to attend. A token of goodwill ip the form of a shoulder spray was sent by them for Mrs Strongman. Lunch was served and everyone did justice to the well-laden table in spite of rationing. ■Competitions and games were indulged in until afternoon tea time. A competition of names was won by Miss B. Wilson. Mrs Nosey 'Parker was nosed out by- Mrs Gilliver. Community singing was then indulged in and Mrs Batson and Miss Martin sang a duet. A papei’ stepping race was won by Mrs G. McNeil and Mi's Inglis. A thread-the-needle race was won by Mrs Patterson and Mrs D. Gorrie. A game of musical broom by the grandmothers waS won by Mrs Paddey with Mrs Ralph as runner-up. Wedding presents caused much amusement. Miss Wilson was the finder of the hidden treasure. Miss Martin delighted those present with her rendering of the song “Roses,” Afternoon tea was served 1 , Miss Martin the oldest member present cutting the cake. Mrs Strongman thanked the visitors for helping make the event such a happy day. Mrs Ralph responded on behalf of the visitors from Mercury Bay and said she hoped that conditions would now continue to improve so that members from both Coromandel and the Bay could go on with regular visits to each other each year as in pre-war days. Mrs Wilson responded on behalf of the local branch of the W.D.F.U., expressing pleasure at being able to be present on such an occasion. Prizes for the games were presented and the gathering ended with the singing of the National Anthem. Mrs Batson was the accompanist for singing and musical games.
