PRICES FOR PIGS

FARMERS WANT INCREASE PRODUCTION COSTS RISING “That in view of increasing costs of production it is urgently requested that the price of 9d per lb. for pig meat all the year be given. The present winter price is lowered too early in the year to enable farmers to bring their winter stores to bacon weight 'before the schedule is reduced,” was a Ngatea remit discussed at the annual meeting the Northern Thames Sub-Provincial Executive of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union held' in Thames on Tuesday. The secretary, Mr A. T. Dow, reported that the matter had already been taken up by the union. . Several farmers spoke of the problems faced by the pig producers which was resulting in more and more farmers giving up the raising of pigs. More encouragement was needed if production was to be even maintained’ at to-day’s figure. Mr W. H. Cheale (Netherton), quoted figures comparing the position in Australia with New Zealand showing the unfortunate position of the New Zealand pig breeder. Both countries were selling to the same market, he pointed out. The remit was carried.
