NARROW ESCAPE
MOTORIST IN PLAINS DRAIN ACCIDENT AT MANGATARATA A narrow escape from serious injury was experienced by two Auckland motorists on the Hauraki Plains on Monday night when the car they were driving left the road' and ended up in one of the roadside drains. The accident occurred on the Mahuto road, Mangatarata late Monday afternoon, the car being driven by Mr J. Nettleton of Auckland who was accompanied by Mr P. Laery. Just after rounding the corner by Mr L. Rountree’s homestead the car suddenly skidded in loose metal and left the road, heading straight for a sixfoot drain which was carrying a good volume of water. Fortunately the car cleared this drain but ended up in the roadside drain, the occupants having difficulty to extricate themselves from the car. Neither the driver or the passenger were injured, the former being bruised around the ribs and the latter receiving a bump on the head. Nearby residents came to the aid of the motorists and a breakdown truck was summoned. The car was pulled back on to the road and although the gas producer unit was slightly damaged the car was able to proceed on its journey.
