THE Hauraki Plains Gazette With which is Incorporated THE OHINEMURI GAZETTE. MONDAY, WEDNESDAY, FRIDAY. “ Public Service.” WEDNESDAY, MARCH 8, 1944. VALUE OF RATIONING
Compared with the United Kingdom and some other countries the extent of the rationing in New Zealand is small, and the rations themselves on a generous scale, but viewed as a domestic matter . there must necessarily be adjustments by all consumers. It is to be hoped that preparations have been made to have the effects of the rationing on the health of the community carefully recorded. In great Britain it has been said that the public health has been surprisingly good. The physical devolpment of the children, as the result of the steps taken to provide a properly-bal-anced diet, has been the subject of much favourable comment, and adults could not have stood up to the . exacting demands of long hours of strain year after year had not the nutritive value of their rations been really good. The study of the real values of various foods has probably made more progress since 1939 than at any time, and the educational work that has, perforce, gone on will surely have some lasting results. Parents who have seen their children benefit by being given certain quantities of specified foods will hardly be content to go back to the old standards, and many adults will certainly not want to return to the old methods themselves. The degree of restriction to be imposed here may not afford any real test, but to the extent that it does control the food supplies the results, should be accurately noted.
