PIONEER SETTLER
MR J. DONAGHY PASSES 34 YEARS ON THE PLAINS WELL-KNOWN LOCAL FARMER General regret will be expressed by residents of the Hauraki Plains and other parts of the Auckland Province at the death of Mr James Donaghy, who died at the Thames Hospital last Friday, aged 73> years. Mr Donaghy was born in Tasmania and came to New Zealand* about 40 years ago, first settling in the South Island. He then took up contracting in the Wairarapa district, and at the first ballot for sections on the Hauraki Plains, which took place in 1910, Mr Donaghy drew the section on the Pipiroa-Waitakaruru highway which he has successfully farmed ever since. He took a keen interest in all branches of sport and* was president and selector of the Hauraki Plains Cricket Association for many years. He was a sitting member of the Hauraki Plains West Drainage Board, and was an ardent worker for all patriotic and benevolent efforts, throughout the district. Mr Donaghy was a member of the Thames Trotting Club. He is survived by his wife, two sons, Stanley and Frederick, and one daughter, Miss 'Eileen Donaghy.
