SHIPS HALVED

ALBERTA AND ATHABASCA

STILL IN SERVICE

This being the diamond jubilee year of the Canadian Pacific Railway Com-

pany, it is fitting to recall three early ships built for the company while the railway was in course of construction. These three steamers, of some 2300 tons, the Alberta. Algoma and Athabasca, were all Clyde-built, the first by Connell and Co., the others by Aitken and Mansel, while Rowans, of Glasgow, supplied the engines for all.

After the ships had crossed the Atlantic they were cut in two at Montreal. towed to Buffalo through Lake Ontario, and the Welland Canal, and joined together again. The hulls, which were built by Siemens-Martin steel, aroused much interest in America, where steel construction was being discussed for naval purposes.

The Alberta and Athabasca are still in service, both having been lengthened and modernised about 30 years ago.
