STRAYING STOCK
INCREASING ON THE PLAINS
COUNCIL VERY CONCERNED
The increase in the number of straying stock on the roads in the Hauraki Plains was the subject of considerable discussion at the September meeting of the Hauraki Plains County Council. Councillors gave instances of stock they had seen on the road while travelling to the meeting and the question of responsibility in the event of an accident was mentioned.
The opinion was expressed that to clear up the whole matter it would be necessary to employ a full-time ranger and as this . was the opinion of the council the chairman, Mr C. W. Parfitt and the clerk, Mr E. A. Mahoney, were authorised to investigate the possibility of securing a suitable man. Members agreed that the travelling public were entitled to protection and that offenders should be prosecuted when information regarding same could be obtained.
It was reported that during the month two cows had been im-, pounded at Ngatea and three steers at Waitakaruru.
