CHALLENGE WITHSTOOD WAIHI BEATEN 11 TO 6 MATCH ON PAEROA DOMAIN Although conditions—a wet and greasy ball, with showers throughout the match—were against good football one of the best games played this year was seen on the Paeroa Domain on .Saturday when the Paeroa Rugby Union’s junior, representatives with stood a challenge from Waihi for the Johnston Cup, the final score being 11 to 6. The Paeroa forwards worked with a will right throughout the game both in the tight and the loose, Paeroa doing a lot of good work in the rough scrums. Baker, Ryall and Douglas all played games above their average while Vinnicombe on the wing did all that could be expected of him with the few opportunities which came his way. Although from the score Paeroa had an easy win actually the game was evenly contested with the home team showing just a little more finish. The teams lined out as under: — Paeroa (green).—A. Crosby, N. Vinnicombe, G. Douglas; J. Jamieson, K. Ryall, R. Baker, F. Chaney, G. Fulton, W. Strong, G. Smith, W. Niven, R. Pearson, N. Hansen, J. Murphy, R. Neil.

Paeroa opened the scoring a few minutes after the kick-off when Waihi were penalised inside . their own twenty-five and Ryall from a handy position gained three points with a good kick. Paeroa 3, Waihi 0.

From a line-out midfield Waihi came back to Chaney who wormed his way through the defences and then handed on to Vinnicombe who then in-passed, Chaney carrying on with a pretty dribbling rush, play working across to. the far side of the field where in a scramble Douglas scored wide out. Ryall did no good with the kick. paeroa 6, Waihi 0.

■ Waihi .bustled to the Paeroa line and in a scramble near the posts Thompson scored. Thomas missed the kick. Paeroa 6, Wfiihi 3. Half-time was then called.

Bustling tactics by Paeroa carried them to the Waihi line, Ryall leading the attack. Ryall scored in a scramble under the posts'. Ryall easily gained the major points. Paeroa 11, Waihi 3. Waihi bustled to the Paeroa line and in a scramble in the far corner Grant scored. Shaw did good with the kickPaeroa 11, Waihi 6. Time was called a few minutes later.
