FEWER BUT BETTER
SAVING OF HEIFER CALVES , OPINION IN THAMES VALLEY Fewer but better calves was a policy advocated by members of the Thames District Council of Primary Production at the September meeting of the council. Discussion arose when a member referred to the policy rqpently advocated that farmers should save as many heifer calves as possible. • It was resolved that the council place on record that it is not in agreement with the reported statement of the chairman of the Herd Improvement Association that farmers should rear as many heifer calves as possible but that it would be more in the interests of dairy farmers to rear only the heifer calves from the highest producing cows, or in other words fewer but better calves should be their motto in view of the present difficult condi ions with sWaw ef labour, shortage of fertiliser, etc.
