KITCHEN EVENING

MISS M. WAITE HONOURED FUNCTION AT NGATEA GIFTS FROM MANY FRIENDS Miss Madge Waite, the eldest daughter of Air and Mrs C. H. Waite, Hopai road, Ngatea, was the guest of honour at a gift evening which was held in the Ngatea Public Hall on Thursday evening last. At a suitable interval during the function, Mr J. W. Neate, M.C., called upon Miss Waite, whose marriage to 'Corporal Walter Hume will take place in Auckland shortly, to unwrap the many presents before her. Mr Neate said that like a good soldier Cpl. Hume, despite his strong inclination to be in Ngatea at this' time, was still attending to his military duties, but Mr Jack Waite would assist his sister to open the parcels. He continued that Miss Waite, who was the daughter of two of the oldest settlers on the Hauraki Plains 1 , was the fourth generation of her people to reside in New Zealand. Her great-grandparents had arrived from England aboard the historic ships “Jane Gifford,” and “Duchess of Argyle,” in 1847 and her grandparents were among the first pioneers of their district.

As shown by her work, Madge too, had that same spirit strongly imbued in her. Before she went to live in Auckland and always when on holidays home, she generously assisted in anything pertaining to social welfare and willingly shared her musical talent by helping at various concerts or afternoons'.

Mr Neate said that Cpl. Hume must consider himself a very lucky man, and that all Madge’s friends both present or absent, would join in extending the very best wishes for the future happiness of the couple.

“As one who had traversed the matrimonial road,” he said, "my advice to you is to solve any problems which may confront you, together, and you will never regret your union. Our good wishes accompany this pleasing collection of gifts and may God bless you both.” Mr Neate also handed the guest an envelope which he said he felt sure she would use to good advantage.

Mr Jack Waite replied on behalf of his sister thanking Mr Neate and those responsible for the gesture which promoted such a happy evening, and for the lovely array of gifts.

Miss Waite said she would like to add a personal word of thanks also, for the kind things Mr Neate had said in reference to her forebears and self. “I do sincerely appreciate this evening and your thoughtfulness,” she concluded. Hearty musical honours were accorded, and a circle formed about the guest for the singing of Auld Lang Syne. Dancing to music provided by Mrs P. Innis of Kerepeehi, continued until midnight. A Monte Carlo waltz competition was won by Mr and Mrs V. Barriball. Those present were:— Mesdames C. H. Waite, R. Dudley, D. Waite, J. Waite, T. 'Sydenham, A. •Cleave, L. E. Jackson, C. Brown, S.
