i — —— Wl .« KEREPEEHI NEWS ISSUED PRODUCED BY THE PUPILS NEWSY LITTLE PUBLICATION The first issue of the Kerepeehi News, Vol. 1, No. 1, dated August 20, published by the Kerepeehi School with N. Cole and G. M. Braithwaite as editors, has just come to hand and proves to be a newsy little publication and a credit to the school. The Kerepeehi School has previously had a school paper hut the August issue has taken on a new form. “The first aim of the News,” states an introductory article, “will be to send overseas to all boys from our district a newsy sheet containing bits of interest. Secondly we want to make the News of interest to parents who, we trust, will take a live interest in all our doings. This issue is being issued free but in future the subscription will be Is per year to meet paper and stensil costs. The News will be sent free to all soldiers.” Assistance At School Thanks for assistance given to the school is expressed in the following article:— “Thanks: To all those who attended the working bee—digging drain. If this job had not 'been done the ground would have been a quagmire. To those who so readily assisted in the job-for-a-day experiment. The results were excellent and there is no doubt about its success. A full report will appear later. To all those who have helped in sending books and magazines for boys overseas. Other help received in this direction is appreciated.” An appeal to the pupils to attend school regularly, and so not retard the progress of the respective classes is made in the following article:— “ Irregular attendance retards the progress of the pupils concerned but more than this the progress of eVery child in the class suffers through the absence of one. Help your school by regular attendance. Sickness of course is always a sound reason for absence.” * Sport Dealt With Sport is also dealt with in the paper, the following reports appearing in ’its columns:— “Rugby: The A team lost to Turua 3-0 and lost to Waitakaruru 11.-0. Both these games were against bigger teams and interesting football was played. The B team beat Waitakaruru 3-0 in a tip-top game. “Basketball: The A team beat Turua 8-5 and lost to Waitakaruru 11-15. The B team beat Turua 7-1 and beat Waitakaruru 17-3.

“Games have; yet to be played against Kaihere and Ngatea. The next term return matches will be played at Kerepeehi when we hope parents may find it convenient to attend. “On Tuesday last we went to Kaihere and played matches before a large crowd of spectators. A royal spread was had by all at the finish. Results: lost 14-8. Basketball won 16-8, won 11-0. Pupils Contribute Others items of interest appearing in the paper are as under;— “Sgt. Black received the Military Medal for bravery at El Alamein. This boy did not get a parcel for two years until Archie Fisher wrote home and Kerepeehi adopted him for the duration and after.—Ed. Jack ton has been mentioned in despatches. “Movies are shown weekly at the school, Tuesday 2.0 to 2.15. Parents who desire to see these films are welcome.” 'Poems, riddles, illustrations, etc., fill up the remainder of the publication, some of the contributors being Fay Robinson, Joan Robinson,. M Fawcett, Kay Jordan Valda Fisher and N. Hayes. The following poem entitled “Save,” contributed by Joan Robinson, will interest readers. SAVE. Don’t waste your money In these times of war, Every little penny helps To bring up the score. Get a National Savings Bond And all your money save To help the soldiers fighting So gallantly and brave. —Joan Robinson. Extracts from letters received from Gnr. A. J. Braithwaite and Pte. L. 0. Clark also provide interesting reading in the paper.
