IN BAD STATE

OLD ROAD TO WAITEKAURI REQUEST FROM SETTLERS COUNCIL TO INVESTIGATE A request from the Waihi West Ratepayers’ Association to the Ohinemuri County Council for the grading of at least a part of the old Waitekauri road was received at the monthly meeting of the County Council. The secretary of the association, Mr E. A. Chester, wrote that if the county council would grade part of the road the settlers would be willing to cut the scrub, before the grading was done. The road was at present in a very bad state, and the settlers concerned would appreciate any assistance the council could give towards making it usable. The county engineer, Mr L. E. Shaw, doubted whether grading would do

much to improve the road. He was over it recently inspecting it and its condition wa's such, through scouring out by water, that in places it was impassable altogether. It ran through a cutting for about two,-thirds of its distance, and the water had no outlet, with the result of scouring and destroying the grade. Storm-water Scouring Answering Councillors Franklin W Shallue, the engineei* said it might be possible to put the grader over some parts of the road, and to fill in some of the worst holes; and if the settlers would cut back, the scrub at least from the water tables and thus give storm water a chance to get away without scouring out the surface, that certainly would be a help. He ought to point out, however, that there were some rocky portions of the road that would not take the grader. On the motion of Councillor Shallue, seconded by Councillor Franklin, the engineer, in consultation with the deputy chairman, Mr T. A. Barrett, was instructed to investigate and report on possible improvements, and the estimated cost.
